Description

In 1829, in full expansion of the Industrial Revolution, the Padrón General de los Fabricantes de Hilados was drawn up in Barcelona, a detailed list of the cotton yarn, woven and printed factories existing in the city. This document, drawn up by the Factories Commission, is a key source for understanding the economic and social transformation of Catalonia in the 19th century. It shows us a city that was consolidating itself as the industrial engine of southern Europe, with a modern production structure and an emerging business class. The register reflects the will to control, planning and rationalization typical of liberal states, and connects with similar initiatives around the continent. It is a testament to how Catalonia was fully integrated into industrial Europe, and how the archives preserve the memory of this historic leap towards modernity.
