Description

In November 1933, the second general elections of the Republic were held and the first time in which women would vote in an election in Spain. But months earlier, on April 16, the women of Canet were the first to vote legally in a municipal referendum. It was a vote to decide whether the City Council would accept a loan of 250,000 pesetas for the construction of Plaça Mercat. The teachers Concepció Gibert and Emília Domènech were driving forces and the first women to preside over electoral months.
The women of Canet exercised the right to vote, becoming pioneers in equal rights between men and women. The women of Canet would be 12 years ahead of the French suffragists, and were the protagonists of an event relevant to the history of civil rights in Catalonia.
Sample of government document, vindication of women’s rights, construction of a democratic Europe defending civil rights.
