Description

The pamphlet “Collectivization and worker control”, produced by the Catalan Economic Council between 1936 and 1937, is a fundamental document for understanding the Catalan revolutionary experience during the Civil War. This draft decree reflects the attempt to regulate and institutionalize a unique process in Europe: the collectivization of factories, workshops and services by workers. Inspired by the ideals of cooperativism and self-management, the text shows how Catalonia led a profound economic transformation based on direct participation, social justice and workers’ democracy. This document connects with the great European debates on the role of work, property and the social economy, and is a testimony of how, even in times of war, an attempt was made to build an alternative model of a more equitable and supportive society.
