Description

The identification cards for pieces of art drawn up by the Historical-Artistic and Scientific Heritage Service between 1936 and 1939 are an exemplary example of the work of safeguarding cultural heritage during the Civil War. These files, like that of Sant Joan the Evangelist from the Sant Sebastià and Santa Tecla altarpieces, rigorously documented the protected works, ensuring their traceability and conservation. Catalonia led one of the most important heritage rescue operations in Europe, with advanced technical and ethical criteria for the time. This document reflects the commitment to culture as a common good and institutional responsibility in the face of destruction. It is also an example of how artistic memory was preserved for future generations, even in times of war.
