Description

The liberalization of the fishing sector in the middle and end of the 19th century opened the doors to a new model of associationism away from guild corporatism and community management of fishing. With the disappearance of the sea guilds (1864) and the abolition of the Sea Register (1873), a new scenario was opened up marked by a large number of fishermen’s associations, each with its own claims and interests.
In this context, the Sociedad de Marineros Pescadores de Vilanova i la Geltrú was established in 1888, and this document contains its Regulations. The creation of societies like this one contributed to the emergence of reformist proposals that culminated in the creation of the fishing grounds at the beginning of the 20th century.
