Description

Pompeu Fabra’s handwritten index for the General Dictionary of the Catalan language, drawn up between 1923 and 1929, is a fundamental piece in the history of linguistic standardization in Catalonia. This document reflects the rigorous and methodical effort of Fabra and the Institut d’Estudis Catalans to provide the Catalan language with a solid and modern normative corpus. Fabra’s lexicographic work was key to the consolidation of Catalan as a language of culture, science and administration, and placed Catalonia within the European panorama of national languages in the process of codification. This file is part of the themes of culture and language policy, and symbolizes Catalonia’s will to preserve and project its identity through language.
