Description

Vilanova i la Geltrú is a fishing town that, in its origins, lived with its back to the beach. The opening of the city towards the sea was achieved with the extension of the Rambla de la Pau. The Vilanova City Council’s proposal to bring the promenade to the beach appears in the municipal documentation of 1874, when the bases were defined for its extension, in a straight line, from the Transversal promenade to the beach. However, it would not be until 1944 that the complicated process of forced expropriation and demolition of 24 affected properties began. This construction process lasted almost 15 years until, finally, the promenade reached the sea.
