Description

Between 1898 and 1899, in the midst of the colonial crisis, the governing bodies of a company with interests in the Philippines document their deliberations before the war with the United States and the Philippine insurrection. This set of documents is a direct testimony of the last moments of the Spanish colonial presence in the Asian archipelago, and reflects the impact of a global conflict on the economic and administrative structures linked to Catalonia. The documentation shows how Catalan companies, integrated in the imperial economy, were affected by international tensions and the processes of independence. This document tells us of a Europe that was beginning to question its colonial rule, and of a Catalonia that, despite the geographical distance, was an active part of this framework. It is a document that connects us with the end of an era and the beginning of a new world order.
