Description

An ecclesiastic from the Seu d’Urgell in Vienna, heart of the Holy Roman Empire. Llorenç Tomàs i Costa, son of the Seu d’Urgell, was one of the churchmen with the most political prominence during the War of the Spanish Succession, linked to the Austrian party. After the conquest of Barcelona by the Bourbon army on September 11, 1714, Llorenç Tomàs i Costa went into exile in Italy and, subsequently, in Vienna. He held, among other positions, that of regent of the Col·lateral Council of Naples at the court of Emperor Charles, who granted him the title of marquis, accumulating a large fortune throughout his life. After his death in Vienna in 1738, in 1754 his remains were transferred to the Seu d’Urgell.

His numerous possessions were sent to his place of origin, La Seu d’Urgell, some of which still adorn the most noble rooms of the city of Urgell as a result of their sale in order to endow the foundations and pious causes he had instituted. This fact has bequeathed us a set of very detailed property inventories in which we can trace a large part of their daily use and luxury objects, which allow us to get an idea of the furniture elements that surrounded the life of a person in Austrian high society at that time.
