Description

This document is an official letter from the Bishopric addressed to Mn. Josep Cardús, priest of Marata (Vallès Oriental), in which he is informed that he must appear before the Military Justice, most likely for clandestine political activities. This fact highlights the involvement of some members of the Catalan clergy in trade union and Catalanist movements during the Franco dictatorship. Far from remaining on the sidelines, some sectors of the Church became spaces of resistance and commitment to freedom and social justice. The document is part of the theme of politics and governance, and shows how Franco’s repression also affected apparently protected areas such as religion. It is a key source for understanding the complexity of the role of the Church in Catalonia and its relationship with democratic and national movements.
