Description

This file collects information about the beaches and baths of Barceloneta during the summer of 1944, at the height of Franco’s regime. The document reflects the moral and social parameters of the time, especially with regard to the control of public behavior, gender segregation and the monitoring of morality in leisure spaces. It is a valuable testimony of how the authorities regulated everyday life and public spaces, and shows the tension between modernity and repression in an urban context. In addition, it allows us to understand how the city of Barcelona, despite the dictatorship, maintained an active social life and a close relationship with the sea. This document contributes to the collective memory about the social uses of urban space and the construction of citizen identity at a time of strong political and cultural repression.
