Description

In 1920, the transfer of the Romanesque wall paintings of Santa Maria and Sant Climent de Taüll and Sant Joan de Boí was carried out, a pioneering operation that responded to the urgent need to preserve this heritage in the face of the threat of its dispersion or destruction. Using innovative techniques for the time, the paintings were extracted and transferred to the Art Museum of Catalonia, ensuring their conservation and study. This document reflects the emerging heritage awareness in Catalonia and the will to protect an artistic legacy that is part of European heritage. The performance set a precedent in the museisation of Romanesque art and in the assessment of medieval art as an identity and cultural element. It is part of the themes of culture and art, and shows how Catalonia positioned itself as a European benchmark in the conservation of historical heritage.
