Description

File number 200/1967 of the Special Court of “Vagos and Maleantes” of Catalonia is a striking testimony of the institutional repression exercised during the Franco regime against the most vulnerable groups. In this case, a mentally ill woman was the subject of persecution under legislation that criminalized poverty, dissent and difference. This judicial document reveals how the Franco State used legal mechanisms to control and stigmatize people considered “dangerous” for moral, social or mental health reasons. Its conservation allows us to recover the memory of the silenced victims and denounce the policies of exclusion that marked an era. In the current European context, this file questions us about human rights, dignity and the need to preserve historical memory in order to build a fairer and more inclusive Europe.
