Description

The document on the birth awards of 1942 is a testimony to the demographic policies of the Franco regime, which promoted motherhood as a patriotic duty. In a context of post-war and national reconstruction, Franco promoted campaigns to encourage population growth, especially among families considered “model”. These awards, often symbolic or financial, reinforced the model of women as mothers and wives, subordinate to men and the State. The document reflects the instrumentalization of the female body and the family as a tool of social control. It is also an example of how birth policies were used to consolidate the National Catholic ideology, in tune with other European authoritarian regimes of the time.
