Description

In 1994, Sant Joan Despí became the first Catalan municipality to create a Municipal Register of Civil Unions, where unmarried couples, both heterosexual and homosexual, could register. This pioneering initiative, which emerged only ten days after the one in Vitoria-Gasteiz, marked a turning point in the recognition of the rights of same-sex couples. The registry sought to equalize rights and make visible family realities that had until then been ignored by legislation. This document reflects the local drive towards a more inclusive and fair society, anticipating the path towards equal marriage approved in 2005. Its inclusion in the digital resource shows how Catalonia actively contributed to the construction of a Europe of human rights, equality and diversity, from the municipal level to the state and European legislative scene.
