Description

Jenny Kehr’s death certificate, issued in 1942, is an essential document for reconstructing the memory of the victims of Franco’s repression and Nazi persecution. Kehr, a German Jew, fled the Gurs concentration camp and was arrested when she crossed the Catalan border. Imprisoned in Lleida and transferred to Figueres, she sensed that she would be deported to Nazi Germany. Faced with this threat, she decided to commit suicide in the women’s prison in Barcelona. His death, officially registered, is documentary evidence of the Franco regime’s complicity with the Holocaust and the tragedy of Jewish refugees in Europe. This civil record not only certifies a death, but gives voice to a silenced history. Their inclusion in this digital resource reinforces Catalonia’s commitment to democratic memory and to the construction of a Europe that does not forget its victims.
