Description

The Ordinances of the Gremi de Marejants de Tarragona, dated 1817 and preserved in the Regional Archives of Baix Camp, constitute an essential normative document for understanding the organization of maritime work in modern Catalonia. This guild, active since the 14th century, regulated the activity of sailors and fishermen in Tarragona, a key port city on the Mediterranean trade routes. The ordinations reflect a corporate structure typical of the Ancien Regime, with economic, welfare and religious functions, and connect with guild models present throughout Europe. The document exemplifies Catalan participation in European commercial and cultural networks, and shows how local institutions adapted to the political and economic changes of the moment.
