Description

This document of marital authorization for the granting of a deed of sale, issued in 1940, is a clear testimony of the legal subordination of women during the Franco dictatorship. In this regime, married women needed their husband’s consent to perform legal acts such as selling property, opening accounts or working. This practice institutionalized inequality and relegated women to a position of dependence inside and outside the home. The document reflects how civil law became a tool of patriarchal control, aligned with the national Catholic ideology of Francoism. It is also an example of how the repression was not only political, but also everyday and structural. This file connects with other authoritarian European regimes that limited the civil rights of women during the 20th century.
