Description

This passport issued in 1821 to a Piedmontese citizen is a direct testimony of European mobility in the post-Napoleonic context. It reflects the presence of individuals from the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia in Catalonia, at a time of political and commercial restructuring on the continent. The document shows how Catalonia, despite being under the absolutist regime of Ferdinand VII, maintained links with other European territories through trade, exile and the circulation of professionals. It provides value as a primary source for studying international relations, the bureaucracy of border control and the construction of European identity. It meets the project criteria: chronology (19th century), typology (identification document), background (public administration), territoriality (Catalonia-Piedmont) and subject matter (governance, society and international relations).
