Description

This document from 1837 records the election of the mayor and councilors in a municipality in Terra Alta, in the midst of a civil war between Carlins and Elizabethans. Despite the war context and political instability, the holding of municipal elections demonstrates the commitment of the Catalan people to democratic values and local governance. This electoral act, in a contested territory, symbolizes institutional resistance and the will to maintain representative structures. It is a clear example of how, even in turbulent times, Catalonia has contributed to the construction of a European political culture based on citizen participation and democratic legitimacy.
