Description

On February 24, 1860, the Diputació de Barcelona sent a letter to Josep Anselm Clavé, prominent politician and musician, to invite him to a commemorative event in memory of the Catalan victims of the war in Africa. This document is a direct testimony of Catalan participation in the colonial conflicts of the 19th century, and reflects how the memory of these events was managed institutionally. The act, promoted by a civil institution such as the Diputació, shows the emotional and political involvement of Catalan society in a war that, despite having distant scenes, left a deep mark on local life. This letter tells us about a Europe in imperial expansion, but also about a Catalonia that, from its institutions and public figures, participated in the construction of the national and European narrative through collective memory.
