Description

The letter of Pietro Gorgolini, director of the fascist magazine Europa Giovane, is a document that reveals the ideological and operational connections between early Francoism and European fascist movements. Gorgolini, an Italian intellectual in the service of Mussolini’s regime, maintains contacts with figures of the new Spanish regime, evidencing the will to create an authoritarian cultural and political network on a continental scale. This document reflects the transnational dimension of fascism and the importance of propaganda and culture as instruments of legitimation. It is also an example of how Franco’s victory was perceived as a triumph shared by European totalitarian regimes.
