Description

The first issue of the Centro de Concentración Batallón de Trabajadores (CCBT) magazine, published on June 24, 1939, is a direct testimony of Franco’s repression immediately after the Civil War. This publication, which originated in a forced labor camp, reflects the regime’s desire to ideologically control the prisoners through propaganda. The document shows how military victory translated into humiliation, exploitation and re-education of the vanquished. It is also an example of how Franco institutionalized repression through apparently cultural mechanisms, and how the written word could become a tool of submission. This document connects with other European experiences of labor camps and ideological control.
