Description

The Historical Archive of Girona preserves more than 30,000 volumes or notarial protocols from the districts of Figueres, La Bisbal d’Empordà, Santa Coloma de Farners and, logically, that of Girona. From the second half of the 13th century, the notary institution was established and strengthened throughout our cultural environment, which allowed the creation of notary offices in the main towns and cities of the country. The typological range of these volumes is diverse. Although note books and manuals stand out, stipulated in the 14th century as the basic instruments of every notary, some also specifically dedicated volumes to specific notarial acts, as is the case we present: the books of wills.
These volumes were dedicated to publicly certifying the last wishes of any person who, for whatever reasons, saw their earthly existence in danger, often due to an illness and the express desire to leave their legacies and assets well established, which were listed. These types of documents are essential for research of various aspects: genealogical, socio-economic, heritage, cultural, etc.
What we are showing you is the heading of one of these testamentary documents, notarized at the notary of Miquel Vidal, in Girona.
