Description

This photograph, dated between 1898 and 1910, shows a group of female workers in a cork factory, a key sector of Catalan industrialization, especially in the Girona regions. The document visualizes the fundamental role of women in the cork industry, often invisible, and reflects the working conditions of an era marked by precariousness and a lack of social rights. Cork, largely intended for export, connected Catalonia with the European and American markets, and its manufacture was an economic and identity engine.
