Description

The letter of A. Haulot, general secretary of the Rencontres Européennes de Poésie, dated July 28, 1951, is a valuable witness to the cultural and diplomatic action of Catalan intellectuals in exile. In a post-war context and Franco’s repression, poetry became a meeting place and symbolic resistance. This correspondence shows how Catalan writers sought international complicity to keep the Catalan language and culture alive, and to denounce the lack of freedoms in the Spanish State. It is a clear example of how Catalan culture, through the poetic word and European intellectual solidarity, continued to project itself beyond the borders imposed by the regime.
