Description: The Ebre River was, prior to the deployment of the road and railway network in the Terres de l’Ebre, at the end of the 19th century, the great communications hub that connected the interior of the peninsula with the Mediterranean and Europe, and which was used to transport cereals, but also other raw materials, such as the coal extracted from the mining basins of southern Aragon.
The main means of transport used were the llaguts, river boats that sailed up the course of the river, if the wind was favorable, although it was also necessary to resort to the work of draggers, who, equipped with bars or perches, dragged up the river, as masterfully explained by Jesús Moncada in his work Camí de Sirga, or the riverside writer Artur Bladé i Desumvila in some of his compositions.
