Description

The photograph of the Cooperativa de Fusters de Santa Maria, dated 1936, shows a moment of collective work in the middle of the Spanish Civil War. Members of the cooperative unload wood and machinery, probably to contribute to the war effort or local reconstruction, while some children observe the scene with curiosity. This image is witness to the involvement of the working and artisan world in the processes of social and economic transformation of the period. Cooperativeism, rooted in Catalonia since the 19th century, became a tool for organization and resistance in the face of adversity. In the European context, this visual document connects with other experiences of worker solidarity and self-management that emerged in times of crisis. It is an example of how the culture of collective work and dignity at work have contributed to the construction of a fairer and more cohesive Europe.
