Description

The Popular Library was the first built by the Commonwealth of Catalonia and was inaugurated in 1918. The building itself served as a model for the following and was built as a temple of culture, showy but at the same time practical. In Valls, it was the first public cultural facility built since the opening of the Teatre Principal at the end of the 1850s. The library’s Board of Trustees organized high culture events in the early years, but the management changed with the addition of Mercè Enrich as director in 1922. Here, as everywhere, libraries became cultural activists.
