Description: The 80s were a decade of opening up of Spain and Catalonia towards the European continent. The consolidation of democracy allowed the inclusion of the State within the concert of democratic countries of Europe and their institutions. From these instances, they began to promote studies, awareness campaigns and specific policies to improve the situation of women. Public bodies began to be formed such as the Women’s Institute, launched by the PSOE in 1983, the regional governments also launched departments, councils… General Directorates for Women appeared, in some town halls equality councils began to be created, etc.
In the photograph we provide you can see a feminist demonstration that took place in Barcelona around the 80s. The most curious thing is the presence of Margarita Ammann Martínez (1947-2000), a radical feminist, separatist lesbian, philosopher, essayist, activist, known for participating in movements in favor of peace and disarmament, ecology and human rights. Throughout his life he combined militancy and activism with his artistic side. From a very young age she was involved in the creation and promotion of women’s groups and publications, mostly financed with her own money. In 1976 she participated in the first Catalan Women’s Days. In 1978 he created the first female musical group. In 1979, at the II State Conference on Women in Granada, she presented her work “Feminism of difference”, which served as a starting point for the long discussion of feminisms throughout the State that would take place in the following years. In 1984, she founded the Center for Women’s Studies “El Centre”, a non-profit association from which several entities and projects would emerge. In this space, her most fruitful stage took place, where she participated in and created different women’s initiatives, such as the Assembly of Independent Feminists of Barcelona, the Cultural Association of Women La Nostra Illa, the Gram Teatre Women’s Group, the first feminist summer school and the Amazon Network, which organized in 1987 the First Week of Lesbians in Barcelona, with European participation.
