Description

This photographic report by Montserrat Vidal-Barraquer, made in 1970 in Cambrils, sensitively documents the daily life of fishermen and their wives, protagonists of a seafaring world rooted in the Catalan coast. The work reflects the heartbeats of Catalan society and its relationship with historical habitats, showing a local economy based on fishing and a social structure marked by family collaboration. As a photographic document, it provides an intimate and traditional view of a specific territory—the Baix Camp, within the vegueria of Tarragona—and contributes to preserving the memory of a profession and a lifestyle in transformation. Vidal-Barraquer, a pioneer of amateur photography in Catalonia, offers us a unique vision that links popular culture with the construction of a European identity based on diversity and shared memory.
