Description

The photograph of the Holy Week procession in Montjuïc, dated 1962, is a visual testimony of popular religiosity during the Franco regime. These public manifestations of faith, often promoted by the regime, had a double function: to reinforce Catholic morality and to project an image of order and tradition. However, beyond the political instrumentalization, the image reflects the collective experience of a society marked by repression, but also by the continuity of deep-rooted rituals. The location in Montjuïc, a space loaded with historical and symbolic memory, adds a layer of meaning to the image. This document allows us to understand how religion, culture and power were intertwined in the construction of Catalan identity during the 20th century. Its inclusion in the digital resource provides a critical and contextualized look at public life under Franco.
