Description

The group portrait of the members of the Flors de Maig sardanist group of the Societat Cultural Recreativa l’Amistat de Mollerussa, dated 1928, is the oldest photograph preserved in the Regional Archives of Pla d’Urgell of a sardanist group. This visual document bears witness to the cultural and associative vitality of the Ponent lands, and reflects how the sardana, beyond being a dance, became a symbol of collective identity and social cohesion. The image is part of the themes of culture and the heartbeat of Catalan society, and shows how, from the local level, people actively participated in the construction of a modern and rooted Catalan culture, in tune with the European movements for the recovery and projection of popular traditions.
