Description

The document on the campaign to preserve Les Gavarres, dated 1976, reflects one of the first major citizen mobilizations in defense of natural heritage in Catalonia, still in the context of Franco’s regime. This movement, driven by local entities, ecologists and residents, called for the protection of a natural space of high ecological and cultural value against the urban and industrial threat. The preserved documentation shows how, even in an authoritarian regime, Catalan civil society knew how to organize itself to defend the territory and the common good. This struggle anticipates the European values of sustainability, citizen participation and respect for the environment. The case of Les Gavarres exemplifies how Catalonia has contributed to the construction of a greener and more democratic Europe, where the voice of citizens plays a key role in the management of the territory and the preservation of natural heritage.
