Description

This photograph from the year 1933 shows the hemicycle of the Parliament of Catalonia in full operation, with the 135 deputies gathered in plenary session. The document visualizes a key moment in Catalan institutional history: the consolidation of self-government within the Second Republic, after the approval of the Statute of 1932. The chamber symbolizes the recovery of parliamentary sovereignty and the will to build a modern and representative democracy. This image takes on even more value if you consider that soon after, with the arrival of the Franco dictatorship, these institutions would be abolished. It is a testimony to the European vocation of Catalonia, which aspired to be part of a democratic, plural and respectful Europe with national identities.
