Description

From Athens to Seu d’Urgell, the Olympic flame travels across Europe. Simultaneously with the presentation of Barcelona’s candidacy for the 1992 Olympic Games, the full session of the Seu d’Urgell City Council on 7 November 1983 asked the Olympic Office of the county capital that the city of Urgell be included in the Olympic map of Catalonia. The context was favorable because the International Olympic Committee had agreed to introduce the white water slalom competition as an Olympic discipline for the first time.

Finally, on December 4, 1987, the Barcelona’92 Olympic Organizing Committee designated Seu d’Urgell as the venue for the Olympic canoe-kayak slalom events. This brought about a great transformation, on a city scale, that had never been experienced in such a short time. At the same time the realization of the Olympic competitions contributed to an opening of the city to Europe and the world.
