Description

On the one hand, the selected documents show us two documentary media that are present in the archives, and that go beyond textual documents on paper: sound documents on analog media, and paper photographs. These media and especially the recording techniques are in decline and the archives are the custodians of their memory.
Beyond the supports and types of documents, the two documents show us two key aspects in the evolution of European history: the importance given to the education of children and the role of women.
The concern for education was well present in the towns of Catalonia at least since the modern period when studies were created by the universities of the towns to provide the first knowledge, and since the municipal laws of the time of Isabel II universalized the teaching of the first letters in all the municipalities, with the economic effort that this meant for families and councils with few resources like that of Castellbisbal.
The two documents also show us another essential aspect which is the role of women in society. Beyond a stereotypical image of women at the beginning to the middle of the 20th century confined to the home, these had social recognition and a fundamental role in culture and social progress which is shown here in the presence of women as teachers.
