Description

Between the 15th and 16th centuries, the Villa de Gironella received several privileges granted by the monarchy, collected in a volume that is preserved today as a testament to its institutional trajectory. This book of privileges not only reflects the rights and concessions that shaped local self-government, but also tells us about a Catalonia articulated in towns and communities with their own voice within the political structure of the Crown. Through this document, we can follow the evolution of the relationship between the royal power and the municipalities, and understand how these privileges contributed to consolidating a local identity within a wider European framework. It is a clear example of the territorial and institutional diversity of the country, and of how the Catalan towns actively participated in the construction of a governance model that, over time, would influence European forms of political representation.
