Description: On June 4, 1229, the Bishop of Vic, Guillem de Tavertet, and the Chapter of Canons, with the intention that neither the Chapter nor the Church of Vic would be harmed by the lack of training, approved a statute establishing that any canon who wanted to go to study in Lombardy or France would be given the daily portion for a period of three years starting from the nearest Saint John’s day in June, as if in fact attended the church in Vic, only on the condition that during his absence he would leave a priest to do what he had to do so that the church would not be harmed.
The fact that the stay of up to three years in such distant places was facilitated reflects on the one hand that the authorities were aware of the importance of training as an investment for the proper functioning and cultural and spiritual enrichment of the institution itself (the cathedral and the diocese of Vic), and on the other hand it reflects which were the centers that were considered more advanced in cultural aspects in the humanistic field which, interestingly, are neither Rome nor any possible destination or kingdoms peninsular Christians or Muslim peninsular kingdoms but specifically Lombardy and France, in a kind of first ranking of European academic destinations.
