Description

Between the 17th and 18th centuries, a detailed map of Castelló d’Empúries and its surroundings was drawn up, under the jurisdiction of the Cathedral of Girona Cathedral. This cartographic document not only represents roads, inhabited centers and territorial boundaries, but also preserves the visual memory of a landscape that was about to be transformed: the ponds that, shortly afterwards, would be dried up. This plan is much more than an administrative tool; it is a window into the management of the territory, into the relationship between nature and society, and into the way in which ecclesiastical institutions intervened in the arrangement of the landscape. He tells us about a Catalonia that, like other regions of Europe, was beginning to rationalize space for agricultural and economic uses, in tune with the modernization trends of the continent. It is a beautiful testimony to the intersection between science, power and territory
