Description

This topographical map of Lleida, produced by the Soviet government in 1975, is an exceptional document that reflects the geostrategic interest of international powers in Catalan territory during the Cold War. Its technical precision and urban detail show how the city was the object of study and military planning in a context of global tension. This cartographic document, created outside Catalonia but which represents it, highlights the importance of the Catalan territory within the European balances of the second half of the 20th century. In addition, it shows how geographic information was a tool of power and control, but also of knowledge and planning. The map is a sample of how Catalonia has been present on the great stages of European history, and how its territory has been the object of interest and representation in international contexts.
