Description

In 1716, at a key moment of territorial reorganization after the War of Succession, the Count of Darnius made a handwritten map of the Puigcerdà regiment, accompanied by a descriptive booklet. This cartographic and textual document is a clear example of how the new Bourbon administration sought to control and rationalize the Catalan territory, integrating it into a more centralized state structure. The map not only represents the physical geography, but also the new political reality imposed by the New Plant Decree. It is a valuable testimony of the transition between two models of governance and how Catalonia, despite the loss of its own institutions, continued to be a strategic space within the Europe of modern states. This document tells us about power, territory and memory, and how archives preserve the traces of a Europe in transformation.
