Description

Between 1920 and 1924, the creation of the first geological map of Catalonia represented a fundamental step in the scientific and technical modernization of the country. The documents in the file show the institutional effort to know and order the territory through scientific criteria, in tune with the European currents of the time. This initiative, promoted in a context of growing interest in geology applied to the economy and territorial planning, reflects Catalonia’s will to equip itself with its own tools for sustainable development and knowledge of its subsoil. The geological map is not only a technical tool, but also an expression of scientific sovereignty and a connection with the great European projects of cartography and applied science. This document is part of the themes of politics, governance and economic drivers, and exemplifies the construction of a modern and European Catalonia.
