Description

In 1182, the first preserved document from the collection of the Curia del Castell de Torelló was drawn up: an establishment contract that opened the door to a long documentary tradition. This parchment, the first of a set of 648 spanning almost five centuries (1282–1667), is much more than a simple legal agreement: it is the starting point of an archive that reflects the evolution of law, society and the economy of a living territory. The establishment contract, typical of feudal Catalonia, regulated the transfer of land in exchange for services or censuses, and allowed the settlement and agricultural activity to be structured. This document exemplifies how writing was key to the organization of the territory and the consolidation of its own legal culture, which connected Torelló with the administrative and economic practices of medieval Europe.
