Description

On September 2, 1111, Berenguer Arnau made his will, bequeathing the castle of Voltregà to his sons Pere and Guillem, as well as the battalions of Paladol and Gallifa. This document is much more than a patrimonial disposition: it is a witness to the first steps of notarial culture in Catalonia. At a time when feudal society was consolidating, wills became fundamental tools to guarantee the transmission of patrimony and family stability. This text reflects the structure of local power, the importance of the territory and the consolidation of a written administration that connected Catalonia with European legal and documentary practices. It is a window into the private life of the nobility and the way family and territorial memory was constructed through writing.
