Description

This parchment from 1102 is the first evidence preserved in Catalonia where the word “Espanya” appears in the vulgar language, with the form “Espanna”. The document, which contains an agreement on the partition of lordships between Guitard de Cabó and Arnall Ramon, reflects the political and territorial reality of feudal Catalonia, at a time when the southwestern lands were still under Muslim rule. The mention of “Espanna” not only has linguistic value, but also shows the geopolitical awareness of the territory. This document, preserved in the scrolls of the Biblioteca de Catalunya, is key to understanding the evolution of the Catalan language and its relationship with the construction of a plural and transforming European identity.
