Description

Lo pom de flors (1854) and Les flors de maig (1858) are perhaps Josep Anselm Clavé’s most popular melodies.
Josep Anselm Clavé (1824-1974) was a politician, composer and creator of the choral movement in Catalonia. In 1850 he founded the first choral society, La Fraternitat (shortly later called Euterpe), with a clear desire to bring music and culture closer to the popular classes and offer leisure alternatives, practically non-existent until then. A whole social revolution for the time.
This initiative spread quickly and different choral societies began to appear all over Catalonia, such as in Sants, Hospitalet, Cornellà… and Sant Joan Despí.
El Cor de la Flora, founded in 1863, is the oldest organization in Sant Joan Despí and one of the oldest in the choral world. If the choirs usually appeared in the industrial area, this was made up of field workers.
This document is the fragment of this popular melody, with the express authorization of Àurea Rosa Clavé, daughter of the composer, for it to be sung by the Sociedad Coral Flora.
The municipal archives preserve the documentary funds of historical entities and associations, as is the case in Sant Joan Despí el Cor de Flora. The choral movement that propelled Clavé is a benchmark throughout Europe and this year we are commemorating the 200th anniversary of its birth with the Year of Clavé.
