Description: With the slogan “1,200 years of European vocation”, in 1985 Girona commemorated the capture of the city by Charlemagne, in the year 785, and its integration into the European empire. With this reason, numerous scientific and cultural events were scheduled to promote the city. Among the first, the organization of a colloquium of European medievalists and a philosophy congress by the Girona University College stand out. That year, in addition, the Generalitat de Catalunya commemorated Europe Day in Girona.
From Girona City Council, all the shows and concerts organized by the Culture area will be integrated into the same campaign. Among these, two exhibitions stood out: one on Toulouse-Lautrec, also taking advantage of the twinning between the cities of Girona and Albí, signed that same year, and one on Girona and medieval Europe. This campaign was illustrated by several posters published by the City Council showing various monuments and spaces in the city considered symbols of Girona’s Europeanness.
This document is important at a European level as it shows the openness towards Europe of a large part of Catalan and European institutions, a process that culminated in the entry of the Spanish state into the European Economic Community, effective since 1986.
