Description: Josep Gaz, born in Martorell in 1656, trained at the Cathedral of Barcelona as a pupil with the master Lluís Vicenç Gargallo and Marcià Albereda. He was chapel master at Santa Maria de Mataró (1675-1685), of the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar in Barcelona (1685-1690) and finally of Girona Cathedral (1690-1711), a position he left due to retirement in 1712. He died a year later in Girona, where he is buried in the cathedral cloister. A contemporary of Biber and A. Scarlatti, his work is concentrated in the full Baroque of the latter part of the 17th century, in which Gaz played an important role in its consolidation.
