Description

The document of the year 897 on the sale of an inheritance in the Amer valley, in the place of Riusec, is the oldest preserved in the Baix Camp Regional Archives. This parchment is direct evidence of the first forms of land ownership and transmission in the context of the county of Girona, in the middle of the Carolingian era. Its writing in Latin and its legal structure reflect the consolidation of an emerging feudal system, where land becomes the axis of power and social organization. This document allows us to understand how the territory was shaped and how economic and legal relations were formalized in a Europe that was beginning to be structured through networks of loyalty and lordly control. It is a key piece for reconstructing local history and for understanding Catalonia’s participation in the formation processes of medieval Europe.
